On the set of The Sacrifice (dir. Andrei Tarkovsky)

That’s the Zone. It may seem capricious. But it’s what we’ve made it with our condition.

We don’t want to conquer space at all. We want to expand Earth endlessly. We don’t want other worlds; we want a mirror. We seek contact and will never achieve it. We are in the foolish position of a man striving for a goal he fears and doesn’t want. Man needs man!

Orson Welles presents Robert Bresson and Andrei Tarkovsky with Best Director honors at the 1983 Cannes Film Festival.

I do not believe it is my job to attract the public, to get it interested. That would mean that I do not cherish their intelligence. After all, I don’t think the public consists of idiots. But often I think of the fact that no producer would spend money if all I promised to make was a work of art. So I make every film with my full energy and with full engagement as well as I can make it, because, otherwise, I may never given the opportunity to make another.

I do not consider it essential to be understood by all. If film is an art form, we mustn’t forget that masterepieces are not consumer products but climaxes which express the ideals of an epoch, both from the standpoint of creativity and of the culture from which they derive. I believe simplicity, asceticism, and faith are qualities art should strive for. Actually, the only way a creative idea can take to reach the consciousness of viewers is by way of the total faith of the creator in the viewer. There is no other way. Many parts of the modern film serve no other purpose than that of explaining to the viewer the circumstances of the film’s action. In the cinema one need not explain, but one must directly affect the emotions. The awakened emotion then moves thoughts forward.
