A Birch Grove, 1901, oil on canvas, 163 x 115 cm, The Art Museum of Belarus, Minsk, Belarus.
Arkhip Ivanovich Kuindzhi was a Russian landscape painter. He was born in (Ukraine), but then his family moved to present-day Russia. He studied painting mainly independently and in St.Petersburg Academy of arts. Kuindzhi painted romantic landscapes and sought to render the highest expressiveness in illuminating states of nature. He used intensive colours and unusual perspectives to achieve a decorative vibration within the painting. He was co-partner of mobile art exhibitions Peredvizhniki, a group of Russian realist artists who in protest to academic restrictions formed an artists’ cooperative.
