Marlene and baby David James in The Lady is Willing, 1942

In 1942, while filming The Lady is Willing, Marlene tripped and fell during a scene in which she was carrying a baby. Twisting her body to protect the child, she broke her right ankle. Determined not to hold up production, she returned within days of the accident, and finished the rest of the film wearing a standard heavy plaster walking cast, which she managed to manipulate. The gold pin, specially made in Hollywood to commemorate her heroic professionalism, was presented to her by cast and crew. She especially loved that they had put real rubies on her toes to simulate red nail polish.
That is one hell of a quick reflex Marlene had. The little ruby toenails on the pin are such an adorable touch.
Baby’s got a look of complete contentment here. So cute.
